Lisa asks…

replacement cover for outdoor dryer vent?

I need to find a cover to replace the outdoor vent cover for my dryer. It comes up from the ground, not the roof, and has a cover to prevent leaves, water, and debris from getting in. The sun has hardened and warped the old cover so I need to find a new one but I'm having a hard time. Can anyone suggest anything? The normal hardware stores don't seem to have what I currently have.

Thanks!

If you want to end the cycle of replacement, i would suggest a top made out of copper. You don't need any certain style. The place where i buy my copper roof accessories sells all types and sizes of vent covers. I would try looking up a local sheet metal shop. If they don't have one, they should be able to whip one up for a couple bucks. Good luck!

Galvanized has a relatively short lifespan and copper is permanent. On something that small, there will hardly be a cost difference.

Chris asks…

Is there a dryer vent cover that will keep out critters that I don't have to remove lint from it constantly?

For some reason my dryer was vented to go in the crawl space under my house. We got hardwood floors and I think it was the reason the floors started to buckle. Now the dryer is vented to the outside of the house, but the cover for the vent gets so much lint on it that I have to keep going outside to remove the lint. It's kind of a nuisance and I'm afraid I'm not going to remember. The house I used to have vented outside and I never had to do anything to it.
I clean the lint filter after each load and it's a brand new dryer.

Carpet Cleaner Dude answers:

Lazy installers do just that, they don't feel like cutting a hole outside and just figure what the heck let is vent in the crawl space. NOT good. Yes it does cause condensation and could over time cause problems. If your floor is buckling, this might be the cause.
To fix the floor just take some small 6 penny trim nails driven at an angle slightly toward each other to improve their holding power. Nails driven with the grain do not hold as well as nails driven across the grain.

Good you are letting it vent outside now. They sell a exterior drying vent cover in any hardware store that slips into the pipe and then screws onto the building, it should have a flap (vent door) at the end.. Does yours?
You could always tape it open..in all my years of handy work I have NEVER been called to remove any varmints out of it..

Next.. As for the dust build up.. Make sure you always unplug dryer before cleaing vent. Btw.. Vents always need to be cleaned. One two three with a vacuum.
Make sure piping is as short a possible as well and is stright and level.

Betty asks…

can the motor on my dryer burn if the vent is cover?

can the motor on my clothes dryer burn if the vent is cover with clothes?

Carpet Cleaner Dude answers:

Yes and you can burn your house down.

Linda asks…

Outdoor dryer vent is covered with snow?

Is it dangerous to turn on the dryer if vent is covered with 2 feet of snow?

Carpet Cleaner Dude answers:

It will only take a few minutes to uncover it. Not only could it be hazardous but the clothes will never dry if the moisture laden air cannot escape the dryer.

Sandy asks…

how do I hide my outside dryer vent?

When my house was built, the builder vented the dryer to the covered front entry way. I have put a lint trap box to filter the lint. Next, I disguised the area with plants. I continue to have lint cover the plants' leaves, front door, and floor of the porch. What else can I do to cut down on the lint? Moving the vent is not an option due to the layout.

Carpet Cleaner Dude answers:

Can you build a box with window screen sides for ventilation that you can remove and clean from time to time but that will contain the lint and keep it off of the plants?
